The Targus Lap Chill Mat is a very simple, but very effective design – and is ideal for keeping your laptop cool. It has two fans which are powered by plugging into a spare usb port on your laptop.
The triangular design is ideal for the application. It’s very robust and sturdy and the slight angle works very well.
The upper surface is plastic with small holes in it to allow circulation of air and 4 small rubber feet which will prevent your laptop from moving in use. The lower surface is covered in a soft neoprene fabric. This is not only comfortable, but very “grippy”. It won’t move or slide about, whether it’s balanced on your knee or on a polished desktop.
Dimensions are 2.2 x 15.1 x 12 inches – which is more than enough for a 17″ laptop – and the twin fans are very quiet. You probably won’t hear these above the noise of your laptop’s normal cooling fan – they really are very quiet.
I have used this cooling pad with a 17″ Dell Inspiron which used to get very hot. It made an amazing difference and was worth every penny.
If space is at a premium (whether on your lap or your desk) there is a slightly smaller version available which is suitable for laptops with displays up to 15.6″.
Here’s a short video which shows you the main features:
If space is at a premium, or if you want to take your chill mat along with your laptop when you’re out and about, then the Targus Space Saving Chill Mat is worth a look.
It’s a little smaller than the first chilling mat discussed above – and it folds down a little to make transportation easier.
Dimensions are 1 x 13.3 x 9.3 inches. It is suitable for laptops up to 17″ – but be aware that 17″ laptops, whilst they will be adequately cooled, will overhang by about an inch on each side.
The chill mat weighs about 2 pounds, so it’s not too heavy to carry about with you.
And of course, if you have a smaller laptop anyway, then this may well be a good option for you.
Like its sibling, it has two fans which are powered by plugging into a spare usb port on your laptop. The fans are very quiet and you won’t hear them above the normal cooling fan of your laptop.
The Targus chill hub combines a cooling pad with a workstation to protect your laptop, keep your cables tidy and optimize your ergonomic work layout.
You can use it flat, like a standard cooling pad, or you can angle it up slightly for easy typing. Angle it a little further and add an external keyboard and you’ve got a great, ergonomic workstation.
It has a 4 port hub for connection to peripheral devices – and there’s a velcro strap to keep all of your cables tidy.
Dimensions are 14 x 10.2 x 1 inches and it can be used with laptops up to 17″.
